Lucite Details

One of my current design obsessions is Lucite. It is totally modern while being fun and young. Here are my favorite Lucite details that just beg to go with a palette of white, gold, and a splash of green.

I can't wait to have a place of my own to decorate and redecorate until I am completely broke. I guess dorms are safer for my bank account.

Dorm Design

My school colors are orange and black, kinda the ugliest combination out there. I have found the right solution though, navy and orange. This year I am in a four person suite and my roommates and I have spent all summer planning for our room.

Bathroom Organization

My beauty products can really overwhelming at times. I have way more than I need, a weakness for buying them, and a habit of keeping things even when I shouldn't. This all leads to some serious organization problems. Here are some of my tips for not being eaten by the chaos, and still being able to find what you want.

I hate drawers. They mean you can only see the tops of things, they roll around, you knock them over, it's just a disaster. I like these trays since they keep everything contained but still easy to identify and access. Taller bins encourage dumping, but the short ones require you to actually set them in their spot.

Hanging necklaces is the way to go. They don't tangle, you can see them all, and they it looks nice. In the dorm I use a couple smaller command hooks on the side of my closet.

I store my bracelets on my soap dispenser. It may seem weird but when you have just a few go to pieces its really convenient. And, yes I store hair ties on my faucet. When you don't have the perfect sink like this (or for the dorm) I use a caribeaner an old picture clip. Basically anything that it a rod sticking up.

My clarisonic is one of my favorite things in this world, but I cracked the back. I keep it on a towel to soak up the water that drips off it and hopefully not break it any more. I stack big odds and ends by the ledge.

My main points in bathroom organization are accessibility and appearance of tidiness. Bottles look way better standing up than on their sides.

Decor Dreams

I had planned a big post, but ran into fairly severe camera difficulties, oh well this weekend then. Instead here is a my current favorite design color palette: bright white and navy. It looks so crisp and clean and easily lends itself to fun pops of color. For my first apartment I want to do something similar. Target makes a bunch of great furniture that I am eyeing for this endeavor.

Pinterest really is the most amazing thing isn't it? What are you're current decor dreams?

The Room Makeover

While visiting home this weekend, I noticed my sister's room was a terrible mixture of hand-me-downs, trophies, and unhung pictures. As any good older sister would do, I completed the $200, 6-hour total bedroom overhaul.

Here are the before pictures:

Generally a mess and completely devoid of any real style, design, and kinda ugly.

So here's what we did:

  • Cleaned out all the drawer, shelves, and closets and tossed or donated everything unused or unnecessary.
  • Picked out favorite posters, knick-knacks, pictures, and vinyl records to display. It helps to pick a color scheme to help with this process.
  • Foraged for furniture around the house. So often tables, chairs, and lamps are in really bad places and would look so much better in a different room.
  • Things we bought (all from Target and only $100 dollars):
    • Duvet cover and sheets
    • accent pillows
    • storage bins
    • lamp
    • lots and lots and lots of command hooks
  • Now use those command hooks and hang just about everything, put those posters up on the walls, hang purses, jackets, and accessories.
  • Put some time into placing pictures, trophies (pick just a few to display), and accents

Below is the final product:

A new duvet, posters on a smaller wall, and a matching lamp

Hang a selection of awards on command hooks, hang records with similar colors with command strips.

Placed a bin to hold remaining records, put books with the theme colors, and whittle down the number of books on the shelves. Also pick cohesive frames.

Note the much less overwhelming number of trophies, add a bin for odds and ends, and add a mirror.

We took a chair from the guest room, hung an old mirror, and bought a new pillow that matches the sheets.

So in one afternoon we gave her room style, a put together feel, and some much needed color. It was fairly cheap, totally easy and makes the room so much more inviting and pleasant to be in. I love being a weekend warrior and doing something that really makes your house a home. So what will you do next weekend? Let out the preppy weekend warrior in you and show me the results.
