Tommy Hilfiger Shoot on Campus

This last spring Tommy Hilfiger shot their new campaign on campus. It’s a bit of a tradition, every April and May Brooks Brothers, Tommy Hilfiger, or Ralph Lauren trek to campus to shoot preppy people in preppy clothes at the preppiest place on earth. I must say the Princeton arches are the ideal location, but the shoot gets really annoying by the end. Here are a couple of things

  • They brought in three different cars to use as a backdrop, in the middle of a walkway between me and all my classes.
  • The bikes they use aren’t very functional. Someone tried to steal it, realized it was broken and returned it.

  • However beautiful those male models may have been, they did not know how to throw a Frisbee. My teammates and I were all shaking our heads.

Despite the mild annoyance, and major ego bruising being around such attractive people, the photos really are amazing. I’m glad more people get to see the beauty that is possible in the middle of New Jersey. So here are a few of my favorites. It’s been great Tommy, until next time.

Vacation Style

This weekend is Labor Day weekend, perfect for a quick vacation to celebrate summer's last hoorah. I am headed to Lake Shasta in northern California to go houseboating so I thought I'd leave you with my guide to packing for a quick getaway.

The Rules

  1. Everything should be easy to wear and comfortable. Nothing that will be ruined by wrinkles, or needs the sweater, or restricts movements.
  2. Pack light. Bring one jacket that will go with all your outfits, choose items that can be reworn with only slight variation. If you are picking between two items pick the lighter.

  3. Weather appropriate. If it is going to be 90 degrees all week, don’t bring a jacket, it’s just impractical. Don’t bring jeans to the desert, or shorts to the arctic. When you are packing for a long weekend you can’t afford to pack “just in case” items.

Here are three wardrobes for all your Labor Day adventure style needs.

5. Abercrombie Jeans // 6. J. Crew Shorts // 7. Cole Haan Duffel

7. Kate Spade Watch // 8. Channel Purse // 9. Tory Burch Duffel // 10. J. Crew Ofords

Lucite Details

One of my current design obsessions is Lucite. It is totally modern while being fun and young. Here are my favorite Lucite details that just beg to go with a palette of white, gold, and a splash of green.

I can't wait to have a place of my own to decorate and redecorate until I am completely broke. I guess dorms are safer for my bank account.

Graphic Print Jeans

I recently picked up a great pair of graphic print skinny jeans from Gap for $8. I absolutely love them and have come up with ways to style for the office, the weekend, and everyday.

Cover Up Double Duty

Last month I bought a really great shift dress cover up from Banana Republic. It's really cute and I wanted to wear some places other than the beach and pool. While not quite office ready it's great for weekend shopping or a lunch date.

Here's my version; I wore to the office on a Friday then to the Farmer's Market

Theme Park Style

This weekend I'm headed to Magic Mountain for my little sister's birthday. Roller Coasters are my absolute favorite so I always make sure to dress so I can fully appreciate the experience while still looking fabulous.

  • Wear jeans only if you are sure you don't want to get wet.
  • Basic t-shirt is best, you don't want to worry about your cleavage while going upside down.
  • No matter the weather, bring a jacket. Tickets are expensive and you want to get the most out of it, so be prepared to stay late.
  • Wear a watch and leave your phone at home. Phone are apt to get lost, stolen, water damaged, and run out of battery.
  • Sensible shoes! Flip flops or sandals will fall off, and leave you barefoot. Wear shoes that will be comfortable after hours of walking; my favorite are keds.
  • Limit the stuff you bring to a small, over the shoulder bag, you don't need it and don't want to carry it around.

Hairstyle Envy: Braids

The Beauty Department is one of my favorite places to find inspiration for new hairstyles (as well as make up and nail ideas). Lauren Conrad is even one of the contributors. Here's a collection of current favorite braided styles.

I love looking at hairstyle, and while I am pretty good, they never look quite like the photos. Here's is what I ended up with.

To make it yourself do two small braids using hair from just above your ears and knot them twice with a simple square knot. The bobby pinning is the slightly difficult part. You'll need two, one on each side. Make sure to pin up the shaft of the hair and and begin behind the knot to hide them.

It's perfect for dinner out or a party on campus.

Dorm Design

My school colors are orange and black, kinda the ugliest combination out there. I have found the right solution though, navy and orange. This year I am in a four person suite and my roommates and I have spent all summer planning for our room.

Current Obsession

Green Tea – I am a caffeine addict but with the help of green tea, I am hoping to eliminate the withdrawal headaches I wake up with everyday. It is great for your skin, immune system, and is a much more sustained source of energy. Great for a 2pm boost.

Record Player – I recently bought a Crosley record player. I had accumulated a dozen or so records over the years, but could never play them. I got a great one with built in speakers from Joss & Main, my favorite flash sale site for everything home. Not only is the sound great, it looks adorable, and is so much fun.

No Poo – I am currently trying out the No ‘Poo lifestyle where you use baking soda to clean your hair instead of shampoo. The first week was a bit rough, but already my hair looks great from the moment I get out of the shower until the next time I wash it. It’s super easy and way cheaper than normal shampoos. Great website if you are thinking about it here.

RunKeeper – I am getting back into shape for Frisbee next month, which means a lot of running. RunKeeper helps me tack my process through interval training, sprints, and distance runs. I can set goals, save my favorite routes, and manually enter a run. One of my Back to School Apps.
Free for iOS and Android

Lily Agenda – I just got my Tusk In Sun Large Agenda from Lifeguard Press. It’s perfect for all my events, to do’s, reminders, and appointments. Plus it is absolutely the pinnacle of prep. Also part of my oh so necessary school supplies.
